The History of Waterford Community Cemetery

The original site of the Waterford cemetery was located on the west side of Waterford near Lake Leboeuf, this was found to be less than ideal shortly after it was already established. The burial ground was moved by the borough in 1840 to its current location at East second street.  The simple church yard style was laid out by William Benson on 1.25 acres of land. Some of the graves were exhumed from the previous location and buried in the "new" cemetery.

Some of the headstones date back as far as 1803.

In 1864, fifty-one male citizens formed the Waterford Cemetery Association and took possession of the cemetery from the borough. The Association purchased an additional 8.75 acres. Many of Waterford's most prominent men and women were choosing this cemetery as their final resting place.

In 1917, 10 more acres were purchased to expand the grounds, however 3 acres were sold as "unusable" land. In total, what is now known as the East Cemetery has 17 acres to which is mostly at capacity and is closed to the purchasing of burial plots.

In 2009, the Waterford Cemetery Association purchased property on the West side of Waterford on Old State Road. The managers felt that the "Old" East cemetery was close to capacity and it was necessary in order to continue providing burial grounds for Waterford residents. The "New" West Cemetery provides 12 acres of open space.
